Week 6

Week 6 consisted on working on our design draft and finalizing our model. We decided that our collection tank will be underground along with the pump and filter. We kept in mind that the temperature of the water throughout winter could freeze, so we are going to put our tank, filter and pump below the frost line. We are also working on figuring out the dimensions for the parts we need. We plan on having a sediment filter to pre-filter the water before it goes to the filter. This will catch larger particles such as leaves, bugs, sticks, etc. We also calculated how large our storage container will need to be based on monthly usage and the amount of water collected in a month. Depending on the fill level of the tank, will determine how much water is available to use. In order to automatically switch between using the rainwater and the water main line, we plan on implementing a device that acts as a switch between the water lines. We found a sensor that takes pressure into account, by placing that in the tank, the device can measure the water levels. By connecting the pressure gauge to the switch, it will automatically take water from the tank when it has a sufficient water level. In the case of a heavy month of rain, there will be a let out valve at the top of the tank to prevent filling all the way up and becoming pressurized. Along with the reuse of the rainwater, we plan on installing low-flow spouts. Reducing the water used along with the water used from the collection tank, will increase efficiency even more.
